Facts

A fouled bottom, an accumulation of marine growth, moss and barnacles in sea water, and the accumulation of dirt, slime, lime, and other matter in salt water, is the major cause of poor boat performance. Cleaning the boat's bottom frequently during your boating season will greatly improve boat performance.

Some Interesting Facts:
To show the dramatic effect cleanliness plays, we tested a 330 Silverton Yacht in salt water for 40 days. The hull is painted with a standard bottomcote. The power-plant is twin 330 Crusader 5.7's, and the vessels weight was 20,500 lbs.  The following is the dramatic loss of power.

SPEED:
At beginning of test . . . 25.0 mph (WOT 4800 RPM)
After 10 days in water. . 21.5 mph (WOT 4500 RPM)
After 20 days in water. . 18.5 mph (WOT4100 RPM)
After 40 days in water. . 16.0 mph (WOT 3800 RPM)

Running Gear Cleaning •

The term "running gear" refers to a boat's propeller(s), shaft(s), strut(s), trim tabs, intakes (through-hulls), intake covers, transducer(s), knotmeter, keel cooler(s) (when applicable), grounding plate(s), and line cutter(s).

With just a few barnacles on your boat's running gear you might experience symptoms such as:
vibration when the boat is in gear
• black smoke coming from your exhaust
• loss of RPMs
• increased fuel consumption
• "prop walk" or an inability to control the direction of your boats movement even when in gear
• knotmeter failure
• depth-finder failure
lack of ability to draw water through your intakes

If these symptoms are ignored, or if a boats is run with heavy barnacle growth on the running gear it could result in much more serious problems such as:
• warped shaft
• damaged cutless bearing
• overheated engine
• nonfunctioning AC unit
